What Exactly is SEO?

We frequently hear the question, “What exactly is SEO?”

SEO became an Internet marketing buzzword several years ago, but we find that many people still do not understand the premise behind SEO – or how to make it work for their company.

SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” In layman’s terms, this is a process performed to affect the visibility of a website or web page (one specific page on a website) in search results. Typically, this is only in reference to unpaid search results – also known as ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ search results.

Back in the day (you know, roughly three or four years ago), writing website content to excel at SEO meant keyword stuffing (adding popular keywords to your content to reach the Google robots), but as Heather wrote in her blog post the end of 2013, SEO has moved away from the traditional keyword stuffing.

Today, SEO is more complex than ever before.

So what can you do today to increase SEO on your site?

  • Write quality content. Writing quality content is paramount to showing up well in search engine results.
  • Include keywords. You want to make sure you have important keywords included – but not so much that search engines consider the content stuffed.
  • Create quality links to your content. Social media shares can help increase the odds of your website or web page showing up in search engine results for specific topics.
  • Include page titles and meta descriptions on each page. Page titles should be between 65-69 characters and meta descriptions should be between 156-160 characters.
